Aleppo soap
Aleppo soap is a must have for body care that certainly cannot be missing from your shop. Born in Syria, Aleppo soap is an ancestor of Marseille soap and takes its name from the city of Aleppo. It is certainly the oldest soap in the world, dating back to around 3500 years ago, yet is still highly appreciated today for its many helpful qualities.
It is a handmade soap, 100% natural and free from any additives or perfumes. Aleppo soap comes from the saponification process of olive oil to which laurel oil is then added, two precious oils with countless beneficial qualities for the skin. It is important to note that the higher the percentage of laurel oil, the greater the value of the soap, even if a high concentration of this oil may not be well tolerated by those with sensitive skin, and who therefore should use a soap with a lower percentage of laurel oil.
Aleppo soap has cleansing, anti-inflammatory, purifying, antibacterial and emollient properties. This soap, with the benefits of laurel oil can be used every day and can also be used in case of acne, eczema, and psoriasis.
As already mentioned above, some small precautions should be taken only for those who are sensitive to its components. It can be used for face, body, hands, hair and is also ideal for infants. Bars of Aleppo soap have various household uses such as scenting wardrobes or for hand washing, and they also an excellent moth repellent. For correct use of Aleppo soap, it is recommended to use only a wooden soap dish.
Najel and its story
The history of Najel dates back to 1895, that is, when the Al Najjar family began producing real Aleppo soap. Making use of traditional knowledge handed down from generation to generation and the skills of master soap makers, since 1996, in their laboratory in Lyon, the Najjar family has specialised in the production of natural and organic products of the highest quality for face, body and hair care.
These cosmetics are now easily available since Phoenix Import has chosen to include them in its range of body care products.
The preparation of Aleppo Najel soap
Laboratoire Najjar produces authentic, natural Aleppo soap, made exclusively with olive oil and laurel oil, which give the soap its quality of excellence.
To prepare Aleppo soap, Najel uses its soap factory and laboratory for production, filling, and labelling.
Now, let us see in detail what are the phases for preparing Aleppo soap following the traditional method:
- Hot water and sodium hydroxide are heated inside a cauldron. Olive oil is then added. The mixture is kept at a high temperature for 12 hours owing to a steam distillation system. The dough is then left to rest.
- The next day, the paste is heated, mixing, and adding the filtered laurel oil.
- This paste is then rinsed several times with salt water to remove the caustic substances.
The entire procedure is the actual saponification process; the oil is in fact transformed into soap molecules because of a natural chemical reaction between the oils and sodium hydroxide.
- Then, the soap paste is spread inside a basin and is made smooth on the surface. Once solidified, it is hand cut into blocks of soap. Each soap is then hand stamped with the Najel seal.
- Divided according to the percentage of laurel oil, the soaps are then placed in ventilated cellars, away from the sun. Here they will remain for at least 9 months for the drying process. Once oxidized, the soaps will take on the typical yellow/brown colour on the surface, while inside they will maintain an olive-green colour.
- Once the drying period is completed, the soaps are cleaned, wrapped in film, and packaged ready to be used.
Hand cut Aleppo soap is what is called traditional hard soap. These Aleppo soaps can also be transformed by adding an ingredient and shaped to obtain Aleppo soaps scented with different fragrances.

When you say Najel, you mean authentic Aleppo soap, but also innovation thanks to the creation of new certified organic formulas by Laboratoire Najjar.
